Chin Surgery

Purpose

The chin is either reduced or, more often, augmented, to produce a more harmonious facial appearance.

Details

Chin prominence is potentially an aspect of malocclusion for which mandibular lengthening or shortening may be the indicated treatment.

In isolated chin prominence defects, the assessment is usually made by noting its prominence on the lateral profile of the face.

Chin prominence could be adjusted by horizontal sectioning across the mandible (the bone of the lower jaw) in the chin area and fixation of the lower fragment forwards or backwards.

Alternatively, a chin could also be augmented by placing an implant on the surface of the chin underneath the skin.

These operations are often done through an incision inside the mouth so that no external scar is present.
