Aulus Cornelius Celsus (ca 25 BC—ca 50), who lived in the first century AD, described plastic surgery of the face, using skin from other parts of the body.

Sir Archibald McIndoe CBE FRCS (4 May 1900 — 11 April 1960) was a pioneering New Zealand plastic surgeon who worked for the Royal Air Force during World War II. He greatly improved the treatment and rehabilitation of badly burned aircrew.

Burn Management

Purpose

To save life, achieve wound healing, and to rehabilitate the victim.

Details

A burn is an injury to the integument from thermal, electrical, chemical or frictional causes. Extreme light and radiation also cause burn but are not as common.

The effect from burns depends on the surface area of involvement and the depth of injury.

Superficial injuries may heal with dressing but large or deep burn may require surgical intervention.

A severe burn would require initial resuscitation and stabilisation and usually early surgery to achieve early wound closure. Surgery might have to be repeated.

Residual problems after wound healing may require rehabilitation and sometimes further surgery.

Result

Minor burns often heal up without much long-term sequelae. More severe burns can leave one with cosmetic, functional and psychological problems.

Caution

Burn treatment is not perfect and the key is prevention. This means avoiding danger scenarios for kids in the home and industrial safety measures for the adult.
