Consent is the standard ethical and legal pre-requisite for medical intervention. The professional duty of care clashes head on with the right of self-determination when a patient refuses life-saving treatment. The speaker will explore a wide range of issues in the blood transfusion context including a doctor's professional duty of care, legitimacy withholding life-saving treatment and the effect of mental capacity and the Mental Health Ordinance (Cap 136).
