Breast Augmentation
Purpose
The projection of hypoplastic breasts could be increased so as to enhance appearance and attractiveness. In patients with post-puerperal atrophy, augmentation may restore the original fullness and correct mild degrees of ptosis.
Details
The standard approach to breast augmentation is still the insertion of implants.
Breast implants come in the form of saline or silicone filled bags and in different sizes and shapes.
Placement can be behind the breast or the pectoral muscle and each has its advantages or drawbacks.
Approaches can be via an incision in the axilla, around the areola, through the infra-mammary crease or occasionally through an incision just above the belly button.
The breast may need to be taped for several days or more after surgery according to the preferences of individual doctors.
Most authorities advise gentle massage in the first few months of surgery to help with maintenance of a good result.
Result
Initial results are almost invariably pleasing. A certain proportion may develop complications in the long term but with modern implants, the overall incidence and severity of problems are likely to be lower than before.
Caution
Breast implants are foreign materials to the body. Possible complications include the formation of capsular contracture which may cause a deformity of shape and pain, leakage, rupture, infection, erosion and exposure. An implant has a life span and may need to be replaced with time.
