Botox & Tissue Fillers

Purpose

Botox and fillers represent 2 different means to remove creases on the face. Botox also has many other medical applications including its slimming effects on the cheeks and thick calves.

Details

Botox is a toxin originally found in a bacterium. It produces a potent paralysing effect by causing blockage of the neuro-muscular transmission of signals in striated muscles. It is most useful in removing dynamic creases occurring as a result of the hyperactivity of facial muscles such as forehead and glabella frown lines.

Fillers of different natures are available but the most widely used nowadays are hyaluronic acids of one kind or another. These are physically injected into the tissues to fill out as static volume restorers. Thus they have been used to make nasolabial creases less prominent and to fill out crow's feet and eye troughs. There is a recent interest in using aspirated fat from a person's own body for reinjection as filler.

Caution

Effects of treatment are not permanent and typically last only for several months.
